Last year it struggled to prop up demand in major markets, including mainland China and Hong Kong, and a string of terror attacks across France kept shopper away from key stores in Paris.
Since then demand has rebounded somewhat, but the fallout from Britain’s vote to leave the European Union had kept earnings in check.
Under Bailey's leadership, the heritage brand was also a pioneer of "see now, buy now," unveiling its first collection using the new fashion-immediacy model in September 2016 at London Fashion Week.
He was succeeded as CEO by Marco Gobbetti in July this year."Burberry has undergone an incredible transformation since 2001 and Christopher has been instrumental to the company's success in that period,” said Mr Gobbetti.After graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1994, Bailey worked as a womenswear designer at ’s creative direction.It was during his time at Donna Karan that he first met Angela Ahrendts.Bailey oversees the design of menswear and womenswear lines as well as brand imagery for fragrances and beauty.
In October 2017, after 17 years at the helm of Burberry, Bailey announced his departure from his role effective from March 2018.
In 2008, Bailey and Ahrendts launched the Burberry Foundation and Burberry Acoustic, which aim to support emerging.
The brand regularly collaborates with musicians and its shows have become well-known for their accompanying musical spectacles.
“While I am sad not to have the opportunity to partner with him for longer, the legacy he leaves and the exceptional talent we have at Burberry give me enormous confidence in our future.” Mr Bailey, who was once one of the highest paid CEOs on the FTSE 100, described the time he had spent at Burberry as a “privilege”.
Like other fashion houses, Burberry has endured a difficult period in recent years.
